They Play in English

There is a spiritual application to this story. I promise. Just stay with it.
The language of the Scottish Highlands was, until the 1600’s, Gaelic. Scottish Gaelic differs from the version spoken in Ireland (which is usually called “Irish” instead of “Gaelic” to differentiate it). Gaelic began to come under assault from English about the time [...]

Feelin' it in my bones…

What happened to me??? Sure, the trip was a quick one — Detroit-Dallas-Little Rock-Chicago-Detroit all in 33 hours plus a bit over 6 hours of driving and 50 minutes of speaking… but I am one tired puppy. I’d blow my nose but I’m not sure I could lift a Kleenex! Gotta get some sleep tonight [...]

Trying To Grow A Brain

When I was a kid, I thought old folk had things pretty well figured out. They smiled a lot, a rueful kind of smile that indicated they knew stuff you didn’t but loved you anyway. Now I know what that smile really meant: “I thought I’d be smarter by now.”
When Josh Graves and Chris [...]

Seisun

In Gaelic, a Seisun is a gathering of the community. The word came into English as “session.” Last night, we had two different Sessions in our living room. One was our small group where we are studying C.S. Lewis’ book “The Screwtape Letters.” We hit the chapter where Lewis, as Screwtape, mocks mankind for thinking [...]

Bluegrass in the Park

Some have gotten in touch to see if I fell off the face of the earth since I haven’t posted new blogs in five or six days. Sorry… kind of… You see, I was with my sweetie down in central Tennessee for a few days. We had a blast visiting old friends, meeting some new [...]

A Day in the Park

Four years ago, Josh Graves put his love for the downtrodden and his love for Detroit together and launched an effort to feed — and connect with — the homeless in Cass Park. Along with a large group of volunteers — many of whom sacrificed quite a lot — he got to work. I believe [...]

In the Paper…

I have more to write about this — and probably will be able to do that tomorrow. In the meantime, we were surprised at Cass Park this month by a reporter and a photographer from the Detroit News. After spending an hour following us around and talking to lots of us — and many of [...]

Five Calendars

I didn’t teach an adult class this Sunday morning so I had a 50 minute break between two services. Heaven! I wandered back to my office to sit and read for awhile when one of our elders came in holding a camera. He needed to get a photo of our of our families and, since [...]

Cowering in Fear As the Climate Changes

Michigan is about to face the brunt of global warming. We are taking precautions, stocking up on batteries, bread, milk, dehydrated foods, and full seasons of 24 and LOST. Today it got up to 72 but tomorrow the temperature is supposed to soar to… 69! Nights will be in the 50s. The low 50s.
This is [...]

15.2% 22% and a burning bridge (updated)

What a day for Detroit. Michigan lost nearly 35,000 more jobs last month and now has 15.2% unemployment. The Metro Detroit area has 22% unemployment already and its new figures aren’t out yet. It is expected to go up when those come out this week. See the story at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102326093
Tonight, after coming home from Bible [...]
